Rides, Clinics & Events you might not know about!

Karen Richardson | Published on 6/26/2024

I wanted to do a quick write up and highlight some of the new rides and events/clinics going on this year. These are of course all posted on the Sorella website calendar, included in the weekly RTR email, and typically posted on Facebook by the ride leader. But, I thought it would be good to put together a list of some of the exciting new things going on this year. Some of these are one off weekend events or clinics, and others are recurring monthly/bi-monthly rides. This is not an all inclusive list by any means, so please continue to check in with the Sorella website calendar, RTR emails, and Facebook posts. Happy Riding!!!

MTB Ride at Sope Creek
Ride Leader: Laura Treers
When: Monthly (Tuesday)
Levels: All levels welcome, Laura will adjust based on who joins each month
Who: Sorella club members, invited guests including fellas
Next scheduled ride: Tuesday, July 16th
Registration: preferred

Description: Come unwind after work on a lap (or two!) around the singletrack at Sope Creek. The traditional loop at Sope is about 7 miles of moderately technical singletrack, consisting of Upper & Lower Loops which can be lapped, plus a few miles warmup/cooldown on gravel. The trails are some of the flowiest and fun in the ATL metro, and the beautiful views of the Chattahoochee at sunset cannot be beat. Bring lights since it gets dark in the woods! Laura tends to keep a moderate pace (8-10 mph) and moving time ~1.5 hours but will adjust the pace and duration as desired! While the singletrack at Sope does have a little bit of technicality, Laura is happy to cater this ride to anyone beginner+ through advanced, who is hoping to get out on their mountain bike and have a fun time on the trails. Depending on the group and preferences, this ride could be anything from a fun skills session for newer riders to a hard workout with intervals for more advanced riders.

Graveling in Arnoldsville
Ride Leader: Karen Richardson
When: Monthly (weekend day)
Levels: Intermediate but will adjust based on who joins each month
Who: Sorella club members, invited guests including fellas
Next scheduled ride: Sunday, July 21st
Registration: preferred

Description: Come join for awesome graveling in Arnoldsville (near Watkinsville - southeast of Athens). The gravel is very nice, not too technical, nothing real steep, with lots of fun rollers. Route will vary slightly each month but will generally be about 40-45 miles with options to add on or cut short as needed. Pace is typically ~14/mph but can vary based on who shows up. For summer we will be starting earlier to get out of the heat and humidity sooner. Bring plenty of hydration and food, more than you think you may need. Option to add on miles or cut shorter by doing an out and back. It’s a bit of a trek to get there, but well worth the drive. Option for lunch afterwards at nearby Wire Park.

Paddle Board / MTB Weekend at Lake Harding
Leaders: Karin Helfmann & Teresa Bruce
When: Saturday June 29th and Sunday June 30th
Levels: All levels
Who: Sorella club members, invited guests
Registration: preferred

Description: SUP: Learn how to Stand Up Paddleboard and Improve your breathing dynamics. You will be taught the basics of stand up, how to balance and stand on the board, hold your paddle, get power from your stroke and if you are a quick learner, how to do a buoy turn! There will be 2 race boards and 2 wider boards available for use. If you own a paddle board, rigid or inflatable, please bring it, and a paddle if you own. Will also go over breathing dynamics and body positioning. This will be a fun session and hopefully something useful for you to implement when you get home.

MTB: The trails have something for everyone. The beginner trail is machine cut and smooth as silk, there’s a fun pump track, you can easily ride 3+ hours and never be on the same piece of trail. Depending on who attends, Teresa will go over mountain bike skills needed for the more difficult sections. This will be playing on bikes and no drop.
