Unfortunately, being injured or in an accident is experienced by many cyclists. Having this experience can be a very challenging and can lead to temporary (hopefully) physical limitations and emotional hurdles. I have been VERY fortunate during my over 35 years of cycling to have minimal injuries that have kept me off the bike – however – 2 years ago I was hit by a car resulting in a broken neck resulting in the need to be in a restrictive neck brace for 10 months.

USA Cycling’s National competitions move to different parts of the country every few years, so with Masters Road Nationals in Augusta GA this year I figured it was time to try again. I wanted to do a quick write up and highlight some of the new rides and events/clinics going on this year. For those of you who know me… I melt in the heat. Like melt. I’ve broken out in hives, got goosebumps at the start line of races, sat on the side of a trail during races almost passing out, and have had heat exhaustion more times than I can count. I don’t do well and I never have. Give me a snowy day in the 30s and I’ll take it! But the heat, no way! I guess that’s why I race cyclocross. I love the muddy, rainy, cold conditions. However, living in the south and mountain bike racing in the Spring and Summer, there’s no way around the heat. So, if you are like me and hate the heat but are stuck riding and racing in the heat, and have already tried all the “normal tips” of hydration and heat acclimation, I have a secret for you!

Hello everyone! I am Laura, new Sorella race team member for 2024. I love riding bikes (particularly, I love being deep in the woods on beautiful singletrack). However, I also love doing
science, and for my big girl job I work as a postdoctoral scientist in the Schools of Physics & Biology at Georgia Tech. With a background in Mechanical Engineering, I love building
robots—particularly, I love designing robots which are inspired by nature. Some questions I think about all the time are: how do animals move around with amazing agility in complex
terrains, like on or under sands and soils? Can we translate the physics principles utilized by these animals to the robotic systems of the future? And in turn, can these robots not only help humans access new terrains or perform new tasks, but also help us better understand our natural world?

If you would have told me two years ago that I would be riding bikes competitively, I wouldn’t have believed you. I’ve always been an active and competitive person, growing up swimming, running, and figure skating. I learned how to ride a bike like most kids do and would ride scenic trials on the weekends with my family, but I soon outgrew our family outings when my other sports took over my mornings, evenings, and weekends.

I had the joy of racing through the Ozarks under a canopy of fall colors on a sunny October day this past year as part of Big Sugar Gravel. The race is based out of Bentonville, AR where the Walton family of Walmart fame has invested considerably in bike trail system. While Bentonville’s is known best for its MTB scene, the gravel was sweet, the town provided racers with a warm welcome, and Life Time went above and beyond to make the race weekend fun and smooth. This race capped the pro’s Life Time Grand Prix, and was a chance to complete my goal of finishing a 100-mile gravel race. It didn’t disappoint, and I would highly recommend it to any gravel-loving Sorellas.

Good news- I have the secret sauce to help you quit your job so you can cycle all day, every day!

Ok, now that you’ve laughed so hard that you nearly split your chamois, let’s review the facts, because nobody ever said the above statement and could back it up. Even top tier cyclists are barely paid a pittance for their performance, which is why, especially in the world of amateur competitive cycling, the quest for mileage often comes at a crossroads with the need to pay the bills. Since I began seriously riding two years ago, I've been forced to contend with the constant juggling act of my cycling aspirations in one hand versus the demands of a traditional in-office job in the other.

Two years ago I wrote about my Steamboat Gravel race. It was my first time there, and a last minute decision to race while on a solo road trip from Georgia to California. They offer several distances, and I had decided on the 105 mile blue course (truthfully I was coerced into the blue course by a friend) which would be the longest distance on gravel for me at that point. Needless to say, it was a long tough day. But I loved the course and the town was so much fun. I knew as soon as I crossed the finish line I would be going back.

Hi. I’m a fairly new Sorella member so I have not had the pleasure of meeting most of you. I enjoy the recaps others offer on their epic rides and thought you might enjoy hearing about the Inaugural Transrockies Gravel Royal event.

A friend asked if I would be interested in being her teammate at a gravel stage race up in Canada. I had never competed in a stage race, and it looked like the distances and elevations are similar to what I have at home (summer = Connecticut), so I said sure and we signed up in the Open/Master’s Women’s Team Category. To be clear though, we’re not racers. I turned 64 the week before the race, and my friend turned 60 earlier this year. We’ve been riding gravel for about 4-years, coming from a road background. I will pull up the map on my phone, zoom into various points of interest and determine which ones I would really like to see, drop a pin and check the distance, and then plan a route.
